Book Walk

Through this pre-reading activity, students will practice extracting facts by reading the title, looking at the cover illustration and reading the “About the Author” section. Familiarizing students with a variety of text features helps them to independently locate information.

Strategies/Skills Used

Reading Strategy 8: Extract information from text, charts, graphs, maps and illustrations.

teaching-the-activity-1

(1) Initiate a conversation about the title of the book by asking students what the purpose of the title is. Encourage students to share what type of information can be gathered from the title.

(2) Ask the students what information they can gather from the cover illustration. Inform the students that they can gather information from both pictures and text.

(3) Highlight the “About the Author” section of the book and ask the students what type of information they can get from this section.
