Barrier Games provides opportunities to develop receptive and expressive communication skills. It assists beginning writers with their descriptive language, enabling them to create more detailed images.
Strategies/Skills Used
Reading Strategy 5: Make mental pictures.
Reading Strategy 8: Extract information from text, charts, graphs, maps and illustrations.
(1) Face participating partners across from each other and construct a barrier between them. (For modelling purposes, teacher partners with whole class.)
(2) One student creates a structure or arrangement with simple materials. The student’s partner tries to create the same arrangement by listening to the first student’s instructions. During this process, the partner may ask questions to clarify meaning.
(3) Student partners reflect on the success of the activity, reverse roles and repeat.
