Bookmark

Bookmark is a practice that students use to mark relevant passages in a book. Students use sticky notes that highlight questions, vocabulary or important points. They may jot down their personal responses, such as what the piece reminds them of, how it relates to their life, what they are visualizing, what they wonder or what they are confused about. Bookmarking encourages them to interact with the text at the time of reading and helps them remember passages at a later date.

Strategies/Skills Used

Reading Strategy 1: Access background knowledge.
Reading Strategy 3: Figure out unknown words.
Reading Strategy 4: Self-monitor and self-correct.
Reading Strategy 6: Connect what you read with what you already know.
Reading Strategy 7: Determine the most important ideas and events and the relationship between them.
Reading Strategy 8: Extract information from text, charts, graphs, maps and illustrations.
Reading Strategy 12: Reflect and respond.

teaching-the-activity-1

(1) Tell students that on the sticky note, they may jot down their personal responses, such as what the passage reminds them of or how it connects to their life, what they are visualizing, what they wonder or what they’re confused about.

(2) Bookmarking lets them interact with the text at the time of reading as well as helps them to remember when they refer back to the marked passage at a later date.
