This pre-reading activity helps students access background knowledge to make predictions about a reading selection as they are shown objects from the story.
Strategies/Skills Used
Reading Strategy 1: Access background knowledge.
Reading Strategy 2: Predict what will be learned or what will happen.
(1) Show students actual objects from a story, one at a time, and engage them in a discussion of what the story may be about.
(2) Based on each object, the children predict, and the teacher records on the Graphic Organizer
- where the story takes place
- when the story takes place
- who is in the story
- what the story is about
(3) As each object is presented, encourage students to make connections between the clues, building their understanding and predicting the plot.
