Cause and Effect

Cause and Effect allows students to organize explanations of relationships by focusing on causes or effects. Students can isolate what has happened (the effect) and the possible causes of the effect. It provides an opportunity to look at multiple causes and evaluate the impact and connection of each. Further extrapolation is possible based upon either causes or effects.

Strategies/Skills Used

Reading Strategy 11: Make inferences and draw conclusions.

teaching-the-activity-1
(1) Discuss or brainstorm with students:

  • What has happened (in the short term and long term)? Use PERSIA.
  • What caused it to happen?
  • What are the important elements or factors that cause this effect? How are these factors interrelated?
  • Will these results always happen from these causes? Why or why not?
  • How would the result change if the elements or factors were different?
