With Jigsaw, students work independently and in small groups, reading and summarizing text in order to better understand the materials being read.
Strategies/Skills Used
Reading Strategy 6: Connect what you read with what you already know.
Reading Strategy 7: Determine the most important ideas and events and the relationship between them.
Reading Strategy 8: Extract information from text, charts, graphs, maps and illustrations.
Reading Strategy 10: Summarize what has been read.
(1) Divide your chosen text into four to six logical sections, and divide the class into the same number of groups.
(2) Number the groups, and give each group one section of the text. Groups discuss their section and agree on the main points.
(3) Have students move to the next section of text, but leave one group member behind. This student becomes the “expert” on their section.
(4) Each “expert” teaches the others the main points of their section, and discussion ensues. Continue moving and leaving behind one member until all sections have been discussed.
