Strategies/Skills Used
Reading Strategy 5: Make mental pictures.
Reading Strategy 7: Determine the most important ideas and events and the relationship between them.
Reading Strategy 10: Summarize what has been read.
Reading Strategy 12: Reflect and respond.
(1) Provide students with a response sheet:
- Fold sheet of paper in half
- Create four boxes down the right hand side of the sheet, numbering them 1 to 3
- Label the fourth box “What I noticed about my thinking”
(2) Read aloud to students. The text is read in three “chunks,” stopping after each for discussion, sketching and drafting.
(3) Get students to sketch in the left-hand box while they listen or after listening to the reading. Some students will sketch each passage separately in individual boxes, while others will build on a single picture for each. Allow time for sketching after the passage has been read.
(4) Have students talk about the sketches and big ideas in the passages – first with a partner and then with the class.
(5) Ask students to write about what the passage is about in the numbered box.
(6) At the end of the activity, students may discuss and write about what they noticed about their thinking.
