This activity allows students to consider the role of mood or atmosphere in literature and illustrates how certain words or images convey mood or atmosphere.

(1) Determine the (four or five) central moods in the story and list them down the left-hand side of a grid. Place the most positive moods at the top of the list.
(2) During reading, have students consider each mood they come across, and enter a check mark under the appropriate section of the grid.
