Through this post-reading activity, students identify major story elements and summarize story events. The activity also provides means of delving into theme, authors’ messages, and/or values conveyed through the story.
Strategies/Skills Used
Reading Strategy 7: Determine the most important ideas and events and the relationship between them.
Reading Strategy 9: Identify and interpret literary elements in different genres.
Reading Strategy 10: Summarize what has been read.
(1) Using a familiar book, review:
- setting
- characters
- beginning, middle, end
- problem/resolution
- theme
(2) Read a new story and have students map the journey of the characters on either a realistic map or on a created map using drawings and captions to describe the events of the story.
