Sort and Predict

In this activity, students manipulate selected words or images from the story/text and make predictions before the text is introduced.

Strategies/Skills Used

Reading Strategy 1: Access background knowledge.
Reading Strategy 2: Predict what will be learned or what will happen.
Reading Strategy 3: Figure out unknown words.
Reading Strategy 4: Self-monitor and self-correct.
Reading Strategy 5: Make mental pictures.

teaching-the-activity-1
(1) Choose a number of key concept words or image-producing words from a story/text and review them if necessary.

(2) Arrange students in partners or small groups. Ask them to sort the words into categories and then label the categories.

(3) Ask students to predict what the story/text will be about.

(4) Share the categories and predictions as a whole class.

(5) Read the story/text and ask students to confirm or revise predictions and revisit words as they read.
