Strategies/Skills Used
Reading Strategy 2: Predict what will be learned or what will happen.
Reading Strategy 5: Make mental pictures.
(1) Select key illustrations from a picture book to be shown in sequence. It is not necessary to use all the pictures in a book.
(2) Divide students into pairs and have them identify themselves as the A or B member of that pair.
(3) Show all A students the first illustration. Those students will then go back and describe the illustration in detail to the B member of their pair.
(4) Ask B members to sketch the illustration as it was described to them. They may request additional information from A students as needed.
(5) Now show all the B students the second illustration and have them describe the illustration in detail to the A member of their pair.
(6) Ask A members to sketch the illustration as it was described to them, building on their familiarity with the first illustration.
(7) Repeat the process until all the chosen illustrations have been shown.
(8) Initiate a whole-class discussion about what the story may be about.
(9) Have the students read the story.
