Amazing Alternatives

In this writing activity, students experiment by changing words in a story to make it more interesting or meaningful. Beginning writers are learning to play with and choose familiar, favourite and new words to make their writing more expressive.

Strategies/Skills Used

Writing Skill 5: I carefully choose the most effective words to express my ideas.

teaching-the-activity-1(1) Introduce the concept of synonyms by presenting a simple sentence and providing a think-aloud MediaPrintPlainas you model enhancing the sentence by changing one of the words. Here is a list of sample words.

(2) Prepare a copy of the story with words missing, and have students create their own version of the story.

(3) Share student stories with the class.
