Circular Stories

This activity helps students become aware of a variety of purposes for writing (e.g. to tell, to describe, to explain, to persuade, to entertain or to inform). It helps them become cognizant of their audience and ensure that their writing is sequenced logically.

Strategies/Skills Used

Writing Skill 2: I organize my ideas based on my purpose for writing.
Writing Skill 4: I write so my thoughts flow smoothly and are easy to read.

teaching-the-activity-1
(1) Explain to students that a circular story is one that begins and ends in the same place. It follows a logical sequence, so it is easy for the reader to follow. Teachers may choose to read a book (like If You Give a Pig a Pancake) aloud to provide a model for a circular story.

PDF(2) Use a circular writing frame, and have students create their own circular story.
