Gallery Tour

In Gallery Tour, students share their writing with peers and receive feedback to help them revise or edit their work. Gallery Tour may also be effective in helping students develop new ideas for their own writing.

Strategies/Skills Used

Writing Skill 1: I generate ideas in a variety of ways.
Writing Skill 8: I re-read, reflect, revise and edit.

teaching-the-activity-1

(1) Invite several students to sit or stand at their desks with a piece of writing they have been working on. Refer to them as “Writers of the Day.”

(2) Decide on a focus for the Gallery Tour (e.g. “share your opening sentence or ending,” “share a descriptive part of your writing,” “ask for feedback on a particular part of your writing”).

(3) Group the remaining students in groups of two or three.

(4) Invite the groups to take a Gallery Tour around the room to see the writing. They may sit at the student’s desk to listen as the Writer of the Day shares.

(5) Have each Writer of the Day share their writing based on the focus for the walk.

(6) Invite groups to comment on the writing using a given structure (e.g.”Two Stars and a Wish”).
