Heart Maps

Good writers experiment with a variety of ways to generate and express their ideas. This activity encourages students to choose words that evoke the desired emotion, thereby creating increased meaning for the reader.

Skills/Strategies Used

Writing Skill 1: I generate ideas in a variety of ways.
Writing Skill 5: I carefully choose the most effective words to express my ideas.

PDF(1) Provide students with a master of a Heart Map.

PDF(2) Explain the use of words to evoke emotion by using an example Heart Map – My Dog.( Or create and use your own example.)

PDF(3) Give students Guiding Questions as they begin to construct their maps.

(4) Give students 10 to 20 minutes to reflect and record everything that is in their heart.

(5) Provide students with an opportunity to share their heart maps if they feel comfortable doing so. This may prompt other students to add items to their hearts.
