Good writers generate ideas from a variety of strategies and processes, including background knowledge, personal experience, imagination, artifacts, visual aids and discussion. This activity gives students experience in matching their (the writer’s) tone to their purpose for writing, allowing the reader to experience more fully the writer’s point of view.
Strategies/Skills Used
Writing Skill 1: I generate ideas in a variety of ways.
Writing Skill 6: I choose the tone and point of view that suit my writing purpose.
(1) Pose a question(s) to students.
(2) Place students in two circles, one facing inside the other. See the Graphic Depiction of Inside Outside Circles.
(3) Have students discuss their answers to the question, then have circles rotate in opposite directions.
