In this activity, writers learn to draw ideas from a variety of sources. As writers become more experienced, they learn that ideas can come from stories, experiences, pictures and conversations.
Strategies/Skills Used
Writing Skill 1: I generate ideas in a variety of ways.
(1) Find examples of how Mini Grey uses words in Egg Drop to describe what the characters look and act like.
(2) Have students choose a favorite farm animal.
(3) Create a T-chart. In one column, add words that describe the animal. In the second column, add words that describe the actions of the animal. Repeat with the other animals.
(4) Choose one or two animals as a class, and model how to create a mini-adventure that includes a simple beginning, a problem in the middle and a solution at the end.
(5) Allow students to brainstorm with a partner about what their story could be about. Then, using the My Story Graphic Organizer, have students write and illustrate their story.
