A purposeful writing program provides opportunities for students to experiment with a variety of different writing forms. This activity helps build students’ capacity to record important information, facts and details and to develop non-fiction writing skills.
Strategies/Skills Used
Writing Skill 2: I organize my ideas based on my purpose for writing.
Writing Skill 5: I carefully choose the most effective words to express my ideas.
Writing Skill 8: I re-read, reflect, revise and edit.
(1) Prepare ahead of time some authentic lists, and choose a story to read aloud that further validates the purpose of making lists.
(2) Wonder with students how lists could assist in maintaining the classroom community. Add your ideas to students’ thinking to build an understanding of a list as a way to represent learning. Focus on list attributes that foster confidence in beginning writers.
(3) Introduce an important reason to create a list together to post in the classroom (e.g. healthy recess snacks, habits of good friends, shape of the day or choices for free time).
